J. Crew Goes High Fash (well sort of)

images: J. Crew Spring/Summer '10 Catalog

So we all know that J. Crew isn't what you would call high fashion (and not that they are trying to be, they know their market), but I have been impressed by the styling in their catalogs and merchandising in the windows lately, definitely more edgy than they used to be. They are really pushing more interesting ways to wear the basics and putting things together in less expected ways. Two thumbs up for J. Crew.

Head-to-Toe Coral

Just Coral
Inspired by this fabulously draped Lanvin dress in coral, I put together a little monochromatic outfit complete with Cesare Paciotti heels, Herve Leger clutch, Erickson Beamon medallion necklace, Kenneth Jay Lane coral (reef) cuff, SNOB squared cuff and Alexis Bittar earrings.

If you're gonna go head to toe, you might as well go all the way...as Anna Dello Russo and Andrea Dellal showed us (from my post back in February)....I think the matchy-matchy might be growing on me.

Style Simplicity

For Nikkeeb
Starting with this basic, but gorgeous white Calvin Klein dress allowed for some flash with the accessories while still keeping it chic. Love these open-toed Balenciaga shoes, Ann Demeulemeester belt and Vince fedora.

American Football, Italian Couture

Also featuring a sporty spring spread was Elle Italia. For their April '10 issue they suited up the boys in American football gear and put them up against Suzanne Diaz in stunning couture.

Alessandra and Boxing Boys

We saw plenty of sporty influence on the Spring '10 runways, from the football-inspired looks at Alexander Wang to the surf and skate inspirations at Proenza Schouler. And in the May 2010 issue, Vogue Russia shows us more (really) with a couple of Everlast boxing gear-clad boys and super sexy Alessandra Ambrosio for a rough and raw feminine vs. masculine role play spread.

Bregje Heinen: Milan, Vogue Nippon and Lanvin

Found this street style image of Dutch supermodel Bregje Heinen (in Milan) on trendycrew.com...

...so I browsed for more and found her in this editorial for the February 2010 issue of Vogue Japan...

...and found that she walked in the Lanvin S/S '10 show wearing this amazing bright red, draped leather number (which we actually shot for an editorial for the SF Chronicle while I was assisting stylist Sharon Maloney a few months back)...

...and a beauty shot from backstage at Chloe S/S '10...

...have to love fashion connect-the-dots, one of my favorites.

Floral, Stripes and Yellow

Effortless Spring

I put together this little outfit as I dream of the warm spring days to come...Matthew Williamson silk orchid print shorts, Balenciaga bag, Eugenia Kim fedora, vintage YSL sunnies and Ann Demeulemeester buckled wedge.

Muse

models.com

Out of Milan, Muse Magazine is all about fashion and art...or fashion and graffiti art for this spring/summer 2010 editorial. Love the short, poofy skirts, sheer fabrics and sequined embellishments.

Trends: Fall '10

Coming from the Spring ’10 runways, we saw lots of pattern and pattern mixing from stripes and plaids to outrageous graphic and futuristic prints. The military inspired dressing took off, especially at Balmain and we saw sporty-inspired garb by Proenza Schouler and Alexander Wang. And there was no shortage of sheer fabric and exposed lingerie, think bustiers and bra straps under sheer tops and leggy hemlines, think really high slits and short shorts.

As we look to the Fall ’10 collections of Lanvin, Prada, Marc Jacobs and Alexander Wang, we see some predominant trends emerge and things look, well, rather somber. The color palette has gone very muted with camels, grays and blacks reigning the runways. We see the return of the suit, loose and three-pieced at Marc Jacobs and fitted and deconstructed at Alexander Wang. We see shimmery, crushed velvet mostly in pants and a deep red dress at Alexander Wang. Prada, Marc Jacobs and Alexander Wang all showed us oversized chunky knits that added a bit of color.

Fur seems to be making quite a showing. We saw it in big, full coats at Lanvin and used as an accent along collars and hemlines at Marc Jacobs. And perhaps the most overarching trend we see, across all four of these collections, is the dropping hemlines, in skirts that hit below the knee, mid-calf and longer, in sweaters and jackets that hit below the hip bone and coats and dresses down to the knee and below.

Emmanuelle Alt Style: Vogue Paris April '10

models.com

Emmanuelle Alt's styling for this editorial is impeccable. I swoon over the seemingly irreproducible combinations...blue floral, fringe, fur, red and white polka dots, stripes, chains, strands of beads...all woven together into the perfect study on mixing texture, color and pattern. Love.

Spring Flowers

I went a little overboard on the floral for a very springtime inspired, Easter day bloom of flowers, color and cheeriness.

Do you Polyvore?

It's like publishing my own little online fashion magazine, where I'm part Anna W. and get to pick what goes on the pages and part Marc J. creating mood boards for inspiration and creative spark...if you haven't signed up yet, you probably should.
